In its first year, the partnership between the high school and Norton Healthcare trained 11 juniors and seniors, nine of whom already have passed the state licensing exam that will allow them to work in the field. tiffany and co outlet

Two more will take the exam Friday. Brittany Lewis, 17, a graduate of the class, said that now “I'm a CNA like my mother.” Brittany, who will be a senior at Jeffersonville High School this fall, said she is pleased she has been able to get her CNA certificate free of charge while still in high school. “I'm proud of her,” said Rochelle Hardin, Brittany's mother. She also appreciates her daughter having the opportunity to get her CNA certificate while in high school. Kim Tharp-Barrie, a vice president of the Norton Healthcare Institute for Nursing and Workforce Development, who taught the Jeffersonville High School program, said she is thrilled with the results of the first year.

Tharp-Barrie said she believes the program, which is receiving $25,000 a year for three years from the Norton Healthcare Foundation, willhelp meet the need for nurses and other medical professionals. Experts are predicting that 600,000 more nurses will be need in the United States by 2016 as the population ages, Tharp-Barrie said. Jeffersonville High principal Jim Sexton said 40 students have signed up for the CNA program for next year. tiffany outlet

While such training is available from the Prosser School of Technology, which provides vocational courses for the region's students, Sexton said many students prefer taking such a class at their own high school. He said he also is excited about the possibilities the Norton partnership could open for his students. Brittany said she got interested in nursing after seeing her mother work as a nursing assistant and after helping to take care of her 82-year-old great-grandmother. She said she loved the class, which provided classroom and simulated clinical training. tiffany rings

The students took the CNA class for the last two periods of their school days, sometimes traveling to other sites for training, Brittany said. It sometimes was difficult to manage the course while maintaining other, traditional classes, but it was worth the effort, she said. She's looking for work as a nursing assistant this summer, but many employers require their CNAs to be at least 18, Brittany said. If she can't work in the field this summer, she's confident she will find a job in December. She earned five college credits through the CNA course, and ultimately, she hopes to become a pediatrician. tiffany earrings
